BJRC Racing News

17 boats came to the Osea line for the 2018 Smith Cup with a predicted fresh NE forecast for much of the race.
MLSC Race officer Trevor Holder set a direct course out and back with a longish estuary leg out to Wallet No3, as plenty of wind was forecast.

With a slight "pin end" start line bias, the fleet split between the busy starboard committee boat end, and those feeling more adventurous on port tack at the pier.
Much shouting at the committee boat end as many found themselves early for the start.  Caroline, Raffles, Blue Moon and Geronimo were among the boats over the line
McGregor III protested Caroline into a 720 penalty turn, finally starting 4 minutes behind the fleet, but fought back to the leading group by the power station baffle

A clean beat out of the river, with the faster boats starting to show their legs down to No1 then onto No2.  Nice Tri moving at high speed but failing to make much ground to windward. Geronimo pulling away, closely followed by Easi Rider

Tommy Mills radioed as he passed No10 that increasing wind strength against the tide was producing a fearsome chop and it became clear that the Wallet was rather ambitious.

Trevor quickly reverted to the short course option - 2 loops of
NWK and NE
Reefs started to go in as the wind gusted to over 30kts at times

Caroline pushed a bit too far to the east, ran aground on the Eagle, and was forced to use her engine and retire. Soprano's genoa tack fractured near the Eagle followed by a broken gooseneck on the run home

Retirements followed from Rascal, Moondance and Nice Tri in the heavy conditions

As the boats rounded No1 on the way home, and the wind eased occasionally to 20kts, a few boats braved spinnakers. Evolution and Rocket made significant gains as they wrestled with spinnakers into the Blackwater

Ned Kelly appeared unexpectedly on the run home, but eventually realised their navigation error, and had only completed one loop of the estuary course

Another challenging sail but at least warmer conditions and no rain!

First 3 boats in BJRC fleet were:
Kevin Whittle     Evolution
Steve Sharpe    Rocket
Ken Rolland      Carolanti

In the IRC Class
Kevin Whittle       Evolution
Richard Robarts  Blue Moon
Peter Ward          McGregor III
